Okay, I’ve ended up here but don’t really know what’s going on. What’s Life’s Library?
Life’s Library is a book club founded by John Green and Rosianna Halse Rojas. Everyone who wants to read along and discuss the book is welcome! Paid members have the option of a physical subscription (including a copy of the book and some extras mailed to their home, as well as the digital content) or a digital subscription (including a reading guide, a podcast with John and Rosianna discussing the book, and some digital extras), but the discord and discussion is open to everyone. You can check DFTBA to see if subscriptions are currently open. All proceeds from paid subscriptions will be donated to Partners in Health.

Who’s in charge here?
You may see a few members of Complexly lurking around the Discord discussion server; they’re the ones running the show behind the scenes. In the sidebar, you’ll see a header for Community Managers, a small group of people who help manage the server and its community overall. Our primary liaison between the community managers and Complexly staff is @ErinClements. In terms of day-to-day help and community guidance, we have server mods, who help enforce the rules on a server-wide level, and room mods, who help enforce the rules and guide discussion within individual reading rooms. Server mods and room mods are both listed in the blue-purple color on your sidebar, and community managers are displayed in coral.

What kind of schedule are we on?
We will get a new book every six weeks! Information on important dates like author Q&As, discussion periods opening, and book shipments can be found on the calendar.

What will we be reading?
A little bit of everything! Our goal is to read broadly. We will, however, only read books that have been out in the world for at least a year, so that there’s a greater chance that everyone will be able to find a copy. John and Rosianna will take turns choosing the books.

I had to click a bookshelf to get into the Discord server. What’s happening?
More than six thousand people pre-registered for Life’s Library, and that’s a lot of people to be talking at once! In order to make discussions a little more navigable and make sure everyone has a space where their voice can be heard, we’ve divided members into smaller groups. The channels you see for book discussion are under a “Reading Room” heading. The name of your Reading Room is associated with the bookshelf you chose – so someone who chose a different bookshelf is seeing a different set of the same channels. You’ll be discussing the book with everyone else who chose the same bookshelf you did!

What are all of the rooms called?
Our rooms are, in alphabetical order: Aloe, Chamomile, Cygnus, Forest, Hibiscus, Ivy, Marble, Onyx, Pearl, Quartz, Rose, Scale, Tulip, and Willow. If you see someone with one of these roles, that’s what group they’re in! Server and room mods also have roles called “(Room Name) Mod” which just means that they’re your room’s staff, but you might see server mods from other rooms too!

Can I be in the same group as my friends?
Yes! If they’ve already joined and are in a different group, just ask the mods and we will probably be happy to switch you over. We just don’t want anyone doing excessive hopping around. If you have a friend who wants to join but hasn’t yet, let them know what group you’re in and they can make sure to select the same shelf when they join.

I want to talk about more than just the book!
Awesome! We’re so glad our book club is a good social experience for you! If you want to share other book recommendations, go off on a tangent, or just get to know the other people in your discussion group, check out your #lounge channel. If you’re looking to get involved in a more broadly social space with similar people, your #lounge channel will also have a list of other places to hang out with awesome nerds online.

What do I do if I see someone doing something that violates the rules or makes me uncomfortable?
If a server member violates rules or causes you discomfort either in the server itself or in DMs, please message a mod and we’ll be happy to help. You may also tell other members of a conversation that you feel uncomfortable and politely request a subject change.

I paid for this. Where is my money going?
The money paid for LL subscriptions goes to materials and shipping for physical subscriptions, hosting costs to keep the website and bots active, and minimal personnel costs for community managers and programmers. All of the profits from Life’s Library are donated to Partners in Health, a non-profit organization that works with local experts and healthcare workers to build, improve and maintain healthcare systems in some of the poorest regions of the developing world. For the last year we have been working closely with Partners in Health to support maternal health in Sierra Leone.

How do I cancel my subscription?
Send an email to hello@dftba.com. We are happy to cancel your subscription at any time, but remember, our customer service is available from 9:00am till 5:00pm MST Monday through Friday. To ensure you are not charged please check the calendar for the cancellation deadline and be sure to contact us before then, or we will have to issue you a refund.

How do I change my shipping address?
Email hello@dftba.com, and they can help you there!

Why can’t I log in to my subscription account on DFTBA.com?
The subscription account is separate from the DFTBA store account. Changing your information on DFTBA.com will not change it for Life’s Library.

If I change my information on DFTBA.com, will it change the information for my subscription?
No, your subscription is processed using a different system. Email hello@dftba.com, and they can help you there!

Is it too late to cancel/change my address?
If you have received an order confirmation/shipping notification email, yes. Otherwise you can change your address by emailing hello@dftba.com, and they can help you there!

Why aren’t the emails getting sent to me?
If you are using Gmail – check your Promotions folder. Check all spam folders. Add DFTBA to your contacts. If none of those things work, please email hello@dftba.com.

Why can’t I find the podcasts?
The podcast is uploaded later in the reading period. It may not have been uploaded yet. If it has been uploaded, it will be available in the dropbox folder for the book. You will have received a link to the dropbox folder in your digital perks e-mail for the current book.

Can I switch my subscription from physical to digital?
Yes. You can change your subscription from physical to digital at any time by contacting hello@dftba.com.

Can I switch my subscription from digital to physical?
If subscriptions are open, yes. Subscriptions are made available periodically throughout the year.

What do I do if I didn’t get my shipment?

Is there a list of future books?
No. The subscription is intended to be a surprise. We hope to introduce you to books that you may not have otherwise read, so we will only announce them when they are shipped. Don’t worry though. The books are shipped early and the reading period lasts 6 weeks so you will have plenty of time to get the book.

How are the books chosen?
The books are chosen alternately by John Green and Rosianna Halse Rojas. We focus on books published at least several years ago, and across many genres. We hope we can introduce you to books you would not otherwise have picked up, and read diverse books together.

Can I join the discussion without a subscription?
Of course! Join the conversation by choosing a shelf and following the instructions. You will not, however receive any digital or physical perks.

Why is there no option to pause my subscription?
We apologize. We know this is inconvenient. Because we have to order books so far in advance we need to know how many subscribers we will have in any given month. Our recurring billing software is also not set up to pause orders. We may explore this option in the future.
